Over eight regional volunteer fire departments responded to the scene to extinguish trapped underground hot spots, which fire chiefs compared to burning, subterranean lava. The emergency comes right as the West Virginia Department of Health issued a strict cease-and-desist order to halt all independent cleanup operations due to the hazardous presence of asbestos.
